under 14, the Magic Wave Billabong Grommet Series 2012.
The first event of the series was held last Sunday, April 29th and a whopping 125 young grommets on the island of Bali headed to Kuta beach's Halfway to attend. Bringing little grommets from all nationalities together from beginners to advanced surfers and even some that looked like they had just learned to walk.
"We are thrilled to be a part of this awesome grommet surf series," said Nadia Anderson, Marketing Coordinator for Billabong. "It's all about fun and participation, and even if you don't surf you can still join in on the action! There was Parkour Bali the acrobatic jumpers on their mini trampolines, jugglers from Bali Moon, coloring contests, free surf coaching, a free health clinic and special guest musician Nanoe Biroe. I was stoked all the kids had fun and surfed till the sun went down.”
Registration started at 7am the kids are all revved up, ready to get in the water to tear it up. The pushing heat came up first at 8.00am It was still low tide and the waves were small, perfect for these super young groms to be pushed on to waves by their fathers.
As the day went on the tide started to push in and the surf just became better and better! In the first semi-finals we have Kaleb, Matius, Andre and Ferdi, in the second semi-finals we had Ivan Raju, Molo and Rio. The guys who battled it out all day and remain for the finals were Teddy and Andre. We had never seen so much energy come from such tiny little men before, little men with such big talent!
The girls just rocked the joint, just as energetic as the boys giggling everywhere they went, it was great to see so many girls participate in a competition such as this. These girls weren’t just beautiful they were also talented and weren’t scared of the big sets that came through later that afternoon. Under 10s we had Sinta, Maria, Paina and Kailani. In the first semi-finals we had Dhea, Cladda and Sanny. In the second semi-finals we had Naomi, Hayanna and Julika. It was tough and you should have seen all the support these girls received from family, friends and even other competitors, but the lucky ones that made it through to the finals were Dhea, Juilka, Clada and Hayanna.
"The grommet comp went great, the more contests for the kids the better!" Said Raditya Rondi, Billabong's pro surfer. "They get more experience, they have lots of fun and it improves their surfing for the future… isn’t that true?”
So true.
