Sally Fitzgibbons Crowned Aussie Bachelorette of the Year

Wednesday, 30 May 2012

Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 21, current ASP Women’s World No. 2 has been crowned Australian

Bachelorette of the Year by pop culture website pedestrian.tv.

Fitzgibbons took the inaugural title over a crop of young Australian ladies from a variety of fields including; athletes, journalists, TV Stars, musicians and artists. Fitzgibbons has become an Australian sporting icon after finishing runner-up to the ASP Women’s World Title for the past two years, her popularity helped her win this latest accolade with the winner decided by a combination of public voting and an expert judging panel.

Fitzgibbons won the most recent event on the ASP Women’s World Championship Tour, the Billabong Rio Pro, and narrowed the gap between herself and ratings’ leader Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24. With only two stops left on tour and a small gap between the front runners, it’s sure to be an exciting finish to the 2012 season.

Back in March the good folk at Pedestrian invited Australia to “'dob in' all of their rad lady friends who deserve to be celebrated for their incredible skills,” as they launched the Bachelorette of the Year competition for 2012. Last night surf champ Sally Fitzgibbons was announced as the inaugural title holder, at an event at Upstairs Beresford.

“It's a bit of an honour!” Fitzgibbons told our self-appointed Bachelorette expert Giles Hardie, admitting that her friends nominated her because they "wanted to see Sal Fitz from the South Coast do well."

A judging panel decided the winner after a popular vote determined the top ten. "I didn't go round door knocking," said Sal who instead relied on a Twitter campaign.

It's not just Sally's quantifiable achievements that made her such an appealing Bachelorette of the Year nominee, it's the way in which she goes about her profession and approaches her challenges with such poise and down-to-earth humility makes her an inspiration to us all.

Ultimately, Sally stood out from the amazingly accomplished and talented field of fabulous single women because she's the perfect example of what an all rounder really is: an incredibly motivated and hardworking woman whose achievements speak for themselves without ever losing her laidback sense of humour, generous nature and positivity. Congratulations to Sally and to all the amazing Bachelorette who generously took part.
