After another day of very challenging surfing conditions at Piha Beach in New Zealand, Oney Anwar’s 2nd place finish in the last heat of the day kept the Indonesian Team’s Under 18 Division hopes alive. He will now join Putu Anggara to surf in Repercharge 2, estimated to run on Monday the 24th, in hopes of gaining entrance into Qualifying Round 3
Agus Frimanto and Putra Hermawan both failed to advance in their Repercharge 1 heats today, finishing in 3rd place, so are now out of the competition. “I’m really disappointed that I didn’t make it through today and let down my team. I tried my best out there and would have made it if I could have found the right wave. But it was so hard to be in the right place at the right time,” said Hermawan after his heat. “So now my place will be supporting my team mates, back here on the beach,” he added.

Oney Anwar was full of confidence before his heat saying, “I’m going to get out there and find one of those good waves, and win this heat. I know what I have to do and there is no way I’m not going to do it.”
He then paddled out for the 25-minute heat and locked into second spot by picking off a solid lefthander, following Francisco Alves (Portugal) who had nailed the first wave of the heat to jump into the lead. Anwar then held off the charge of Sebastian Hurtado (Ecuador) with a couple more waves to finish with his and his team’s hopes still intact.
Tomorrow will see the Girls Division and Repercharge 1 of the Under 16 Boys Division take to the water, where all of the Under 16 Indonesian boys will be competing in tomorrow’s Repercharge 1, as both Ediana Putra and Jeren Kiring failed to place in the top two spots in their Qualifying Round Two heats today. Putra finished in 4th place in his heat and and Kiring finished 3rd in his.
Hopefully conditions will continue to improve here in Piha tomorrow and give the boys a better opportunity to show off their surfing skills, and a little sunshine would certainly help out.
