You surely heard about this name. Tamba is a brand that you've see around the world with different surfers, and among them the legendary late Andy Irons. SurfTotal spoke to Saa 'Tamba' Ginlack, brand representative, that recently opened a new store in Hawaii.
Where does the name Tamba originate from and the meaning?
Tamba actually means second born son it’s from Kenya in Africa the Kissa tribe. I was
named after an African chief that kind of brought my parents together.
How long has the name been around?
I think the name has been around for a while now I am just guessing not an expert or anything.
It’s just that i have meet many people with the same name from a lot of different cultures.
But it did not mean the same thing just seems like a very ancient name.
Tell me about your new shop in Haleiwa?
New shop in Haleiwa just opened on Aug 25 2013. I feel very fortunate to have a shop here
in one of the surf meccas in the world. If it makes it here; it makes it anywhere.
Do you sell on-line? What is the name of your website?
Yes we do sell a lot of stuff on our website. We actually just built a new one couple months ago.
So it’s still pretty simple right now, but will be adding a lot more soon. Cali is our number selling area
for on-line, but it’s amazing the places the orders come from like Canada ,France, Oz, and even Pakistan.
Tell me about you and background?
I was born on the island of Kauai on the west side. Typical local boy but my parents where school
teachers and dad was very strict, but I believe that is what made me who I am today. I never was good in school but was a dreamer I still daydream to this day and it’s one of my favorite things to do! But what is even better is when your dreams come true.
Who are your riders you sponsor and why?
I think I have the best surf team in the world! I got guys like Evan Valire, Reef Macintosh, Kala Alexander, Gavin Gellte, Bruce Irons, Kamalei Alexander, Dustin Barca, Kai Borg, Chava. The list goes on and on. Pretty much all the big dogs from kauai and up and coming ones and don’t forget the main man of them all who brought all of us to the top of the world ANDY IRONS !! All these guys wear my product and run my stickers for free! I don’t pay anyone; they do it for brotherly love. We are all KAUAI BOYS. Born and raised. One OHANA. We all take care of each other; to help each other out in any way we can. I have the LOVE, SUPPORT and POWER that money can’t buy!!!
Where do your design ideas come from?
I have a design guy that helps out a lot but mostly the ideas come from friends and co-workers.But a lot of them; I come up with when I am daydreaming.
What is a typical day like for you?
Right now every day is a challenge since I opened another store it’s pretty crazy especially for a guy like me. I just make so many business mistakes even after 15 years of doing this. I work 7 days a week. I probably could hire someone, but I really want people to have a good first impression of the store. And I really enjoy meeting people and making new friends. People trip out when they find out it’s me who owns the store. I don’t just come out and tell people I’m the Tamba guy. I act like I just work here. But when I do tell them I am Tamba they really enjoy meeting me and ask a lot of questions about me and the store. Then they feel they are a part of something not just something cool. They understand where I come from and how hard I have worked to get where I am at and people like a good story.
Tell me something we should know about Tamba.
MISSION statement= Hardwork, Accomplishments, Ohana, Friendship, Aloha and Doing the Right thing!
What does the future hold for Tamba?
The future changes for me every day. Business wise, I would love to open more stores- one in Cali and one in Japan. Maybe on the east coast or even Bali. But doing all that is a lot of work and sometimes I feel like life is passing me by since I am working so much. But I think if I found the right woman and settled down and had family that would be just fine and live a simple life.
