It is now down to the final 8 competitors as Day 3 of the West Sumbawa Pro has just been completed, with the quarterfinalists decided after completing the remaining 4 heats of Round 2 and all of Round 3 at Playgrounds.
An early morning check of Yoyo’s saw still sizeable and unruly 6-8 foot conditions, so the call was made to return to Playgrounds to continue the competition for the morning. Still very contestable although a bit less consistent than yesterday, Playgrounds was 2-4 foot with the lefthander offering up the best scoring potential with turns, barrels, floaters, and the occasional air section on offer.
For the most part the conditions seemed to favor the goofyfooters, as they could drop into and make it through the barrel sections more easily than the regularfooters, and the judges were rewarding good barrel rides with the excellent scores.
Mega Semadhi from Bingin in Bali was right in his element slotting into a couple of deep barrel rides, earning him the highest combined heat score of the day with a perfect 10 point wave and then a follow up 9.16 for a total of 19.16 points out of a possible 20.
“This wave is a lot like Bingin, which I’ve surfed since I was a kid, so even though I’ve never surfed it before it felt familiar,” said Semadhi. “It was really fun out there and I’m stoked to get through to the quarterfinals!”
Semadhi is a previous winner of the Padang Padang Cup in Bali, and on any barreling wave of any size is a impressive performer.Semadhi will be up against young Jeren Kiring, a fellow goofyfooter, who is originally from Lombok but now lives in Bali.
ASC number 1 ranked Dede Suryana (Java) and Darmaputra Tonjo (Bali) are the only two regular footers left in the draw, and Philmar Alipayo from Cloud 9 in the Philippines is the only non-Indonesian remaining.
With a solid 2.5 meter swell peaking overnight, Contest Director Tipi Jabrik has the organizers setting up for the final day at Supersucks, which should make for a spectacular conclusion to the West Sumbawa Pro. With the likes of Desert Point’s Usman Trioko, Bali’s Made “Bol” Adi Putra and Mega Semadhi, and the Philippines Philmar Alipayo, who are all well known barrel aficionados, challenged by young upstarts Jeren Kiring and Riman Jayadi and regular footers Dede Suryana and Darmaputra Tonjo, it will be a fierce battle in one of the world’s best lefthanders.
Quarterfinal 1: Dede Suryana (IDN) vs Usman Trioko (IDN)
Quarterfinal 2: Mega Semadhi (IDN) vs Jeren Kiring (IDN)
Quarterfinal 3: Riman Jayadi (IDN) vs Made “Bol” Adi Putra (IDN)
