Coming to Pacitan, East Java from 17-20 August...
The Asian Surfing Championships is delighted to welcome the Hello Pacitan 2016 “Flaming of the Sea” event as stop number 5 of the 2016 tour season, with a Grade 2 Men’s Division (Rp 50 million/$4,000 USD) and a Grade 1 Women’s Division (Rp 25 million/$2,000 USD) that will draw the best surfers in Asia to enjoy and compete in the idyllic beachside paradise of Pacitan in East Java.
The venue of the competition will be the rivermouth surf break of Pancer Dor, a beautiful lefthander that will offer up scoring opportunities for turns, barrels and aerials depending upon the swell size and direction, against a scenic mountain backdrop.
Nearby Telang Ria Beach is a stretch of sandy beach that has hosted numerous local and grommet events in years past, and will be available for surf practice sessions and as a possible backup location, as it fronts existing beachside accommodations. The Pacitan area is also home to Pantai Srau and the infamous Watu Karung, a fickle yet fantastic and hollow lefthander that has been surfed by the world’s top pro surfers including Indonesia’s Rizal Tandjung, Marlon Gerber, and Pepen Hendrik, who will also be joining the “Flaming of the Sea” competition.
Pacitan is on the map as the boyhood home of Indonesia’s previous president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and is nestled in a scenic bay surrounded by mountains, making it a prime tourist destination with white sand beaches, fishing, culture and food, all just a 3-4 hour drive from the city of Yogyakarta and its international airport.
